Search Finney County Cases

Start a Finney County case search with the district clerk, the office that keeps the court docket for the county. You can look up a case by case number, party name, business name, or citation number. Pick the district-court layer first. Then narrow the docket search to Finney County and use only the filters that fit your record. A good match can open a register of actions, hearing dates, and some public court records. Online access only goes so far. If a Finney County case does not appear, an older filing is missing, or the record is closed to remote view, the clerk and the courthouse terminal still have the full picture.

Searching Cases by Name

Start at the official Kansas CaseSearch terms screen. Select District, choose Party Name, and enter the spelling shown on a court notice or filing. Set County to Finney. A narrow file-date range can reduce common-name matches, but a hearing date is not always the file date. Remove an advanced filter if it hides a likely result. Business Name and Party As Business Name are separate search types and should be used when the named party is an organization.

  1. Accept the official terms and choose District as the court.
  2. Select Party Name or the correct business-name option.
  3. Enter the exact known spelling and choose Finney as the county.
  4. Add a case category or file-date range only when it is known.
  5. Complete the human check, compare the result details, and open the matching public record.

The Finney CaseSearch Starting Screen

The current portal first asks the user to accept its terms. It states that the site shows information available to the public through the internet and that more may be available at a courthouse terminal. Search remains disabled until the human-verification control is complete. That check is part of the normal Finney County case search workflow, not a sign that a paid account is required for every public query.

The opening form also has a sign-in affordance, but public information is available through the guest-facing search. Older instructions may mention Smart Search, registration, recaptcha, or ID.me because Kansas replaced the former District Court Public Access Portal with CaseSearch. Follow the live fields. Do not assume that role-based access described in an older guide applies to an ordinary public user.

Searching by Case Number

A case number is usually the most precise search key. Enter it as printed on the court notice, keeping punctuation and leading zeroes. The official 2025 Smart Search guide explains that newer Finney Odyssey-style numbers may follow FI-YYYY-CC-######: FI identifies Finney, YYYY is the filing year, CC is the case-type code, and the final digits are the sequence. Cases begun before September 12, 2022 may instead use a pattern such as YYYY-CC-######. These are format illustrations, not live case numbers.

If the first attempt fails, confirm that Court is District and County is Finney. Search the exact printed number before changing its form. A citation number is a separate search type. Garden City and Holcomb municipal matters use their city custodians and should not be forced into the district portal unless the matter has become a district case, such as an appeal.

Finney Filters Can Hide a Case

Advanced filters are useful only when the value is known. The current portal offers Criminal, Civil, Family, and Probate or Mental Health categories, plus optional date-of-birth and file-date fields. A wrong category can suppress the right record. Start broad within Finney County, then add one filter at a time. Never place a private date of birth in notes, screenshots, or a local form. Enter matching data only on the official portal when its live interface calls for it.

No result is not a certification. Remove optional filters, try the exact case number, and check whether the matter belongs to municipal, federal, appellate, or restricted records.

The filing range refers to when the case opened, not the next hearing. A case filed in one year can have many later settings. Use the separate Finney County court calendar for event searching, then return to the case register for the case history.

What a Case Search Returns

A public result can identify the court, county, case number, category, filing date, status, party roles, attorneys, and assigned judicial officer. The detail view may include register rows with dates and brief event descriptions. Public hearing fields can show a date, time, room, division, or remote setting. Some records also link to public documents. Availability depends on the case type, the document, and when the court moved into the eCourt system.

Case NumberThe official identifier, with older and newer Finney formats.
Style / PartiesThe caption and public party-role information.
Case TypeCriminal, civil, family, probate or mental health, or another public category.
Filed DateThe date the action opened, which may differ from a hearing date.
StatusThe status shown by the court system, read with later register entries.
EventsDated register descriptions, settings, orders, or disposition entries when public.

Three Finney Search Access Layers

Remote CaseSearch is the first layer. The courthouse terminal is the second. Kansas court guidance says each courthouse reserves a computer for public searches, and Finney places public access computers in the lobby across from the clerk’s windows. A record excluded from remote view may still be public at that terminal. Sealed records are not available there.

The clerk response is the third layer. Christine Blake’s office accepts requests by telephone, at the counter, in writing, or by fax. Bring the case number, case type, date range, and the name of the event or document sought. The main office is at 425 N 8th Street, Garden City, Kansas 67846, phone 620-271-6120, fax 620-271-6140, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Central.

Statewide vs County Case Search

Kansas CaseSearch is the statewide district and appellate access layer. Finney County does not maintain a separate full district-case web portal. Choose District and Finney inside the state system for local trial-court cases. Choose Appellate only for a Kansas Court of Appeals or Kansas Supreme Court matter. The local 25th District calendar is a county and district event publication, not a second case-search database.

Finney CaseSearch Replaced Smart Search

Kansas Judicial Branch reporting identifies CaseSearch as the replacement for the former Kansas District Court Public Access Portal. The older Smart Search guide remains useful for historical number formats and access limits, but its registration flow and field list should not override the current screen. This transition explains why saved bookmarks or older search instructions may look unfamiliar.

The manifest image below comes from the official K.S.A. 45-230 page, which states limits on certain uses of lists of names from public records.

The transition affects the search route, not the clerk’s role as custodian of Finney County District Court records.

Finney Hearing Reminders Stay Separate

The current CaseSearch screen links to the official Kansas hearing-reminder portal. The reminder service is adjacent to case search, but it is not a register of actions and does not expand public access. Follow the live state enrollment prompts because the form can change. A reminder is a convenience notice. Always confirm the setting in the Finney County court record and with the clerk when a date is uncertain.

Access and Restricted Cases

Public access varies by law, rule, court order, case type, and document. Kansas Supreme Court Rule 22 governs electronic access and makes clear that not every record is available remotely. Sealed cases and sealed records are unavailable through both the portal and courthouse terminal. Adoption, child-in-need-of-care, many juvenile matters, grand-jury proceedings, some criminal-investigation records, expunged records, and sensitive family or mental-health records can be closed or limited.

A missing search result does not prove that no case exists. It may reflect a spelling issue, a wrong filter, an older document, a municipal or federal matter, or a legal restriction. Ask the clerk whether a defined record is public and whether a nonexempt portion can be released. Do not ask for a way around a seal or access order.

Finney No-Result Search Checklist

Work through the boundary in a set order. Confirm District, choose Finney, remove optional filters, and retry with the exact case number. Then determine whether the matter belongs to Garden City or Holcomb Municipal Court, a federal court, or an appellate court. Check the public calendar only for a setting, not as proof of case history.

  • Preserve punctuation and leading zeroes from the official notice.
  • Try party name only after the case-number search fails.
  • Distinguish a citation number from a district case number.
  • Use the courthouse terminal for public portal-excluded material.
  • Call the clerk and name the exact event, register entry, or document needed.

Note: Public availability varies, and a no-result search is not a certification that no Finney County court record exists.
